Community is defined as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Most of us know from experience, community can be healthy and supportive, or conversely, community can be unhealthy and destructive. We all probably have experiences of being a part of both types of community. Being a part of healthy community is extremely satisfying while being a part of an unhealthy community is a dreadful experience. The former builds us up while the latter tears us down.
At Corner Lake Middle School, we strive to establish a healthy community that will build up all its members. Unfortunately, we live in a world where a healthy community is becoming increasingly more difficult to find. We see divisions and discord in the world around us all the time, but at Corner Lake, we strive to achieve the goal of a healthy community where there is unity shared in a common purpose.
No matter what are background, we can all rally behind the community goal of helping every student succeed. We can embrace the shared community interest in supporting the hopes and aspirations of children. In addition, we can unify around the community attitude of unwavering commitment to children. When we do these things as the Corner Lake Community, we will stand firm, stand strong, and stand together.
Building up kids through the power of community is the developing culture of Corner Lake. When we stand together, there is no limit to what our students will achieve. Here are some benefits of a strong community in the school setting.
1. Stronger Sense of Belonging and Inclusion Students feel valued and accepted, which boosts self-esteem and encourages positive relationships. When everyone feels like they belong, it creates a safe and welcoming environment for learning.
2. Better Academic Performance A healthy school community supports students academically through collaboration, encouragement, and access to resources. When students feel supported by peers and staff, they’re more likely to stay engaged and succeed.
3. Improved Mental and Emotional Well-being Schools that promote kindness, respect, and emotional safety help reduce stress and anxiety. This allows students to focus better and feel more confident in themselves.
4. Positive Role Models and Leadership Opportunities In a healthy school community, students see teachers and peers modeling good behavior, teamwork, and responsibility. This inspires them to take on leadership roles and contribute positively to the school culture.
There is strength and security in community. If a tall tree stands alone in a field, a strong wind can easily snap the tree in two, but a group of tall trees planted closely together in a field can withstand the fiercest of winds because the trees can lean upon their neighboring trees for support. Let us unite and stay close together so that our students will continue to stand strong!

Corner Lake Middle School is thrilled to recognize Ms. Maeso as this year’s first Gold Eagle Educator, proudly nominated by our Leadership Team!
Ms. Maeso is a dynamic and inspiring presence on campus. As our Spanish teacher, she brings language to life with engaging lessons that foster cultural appreciation and academic excellence. Her classroom is a place where students feel seen, supported, and challenged to grow.
Outside the classroom, Ms. Maeso goes above and beyond through her leadership in Latinos in Action and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). She creates meaningful opportunities for students to lead, serve, and connect—building a strong sense of community and purpose.
Her dedication, warmth, and tireless efforts make a lasting impact on our students and school culture.
Thank you for being a true Golden Eagle, Ms. Maeso. Your impact is lasting, and your efforts are deeply appreciated.

We need your help, families! As part of our commitment to student safety and smooth end-of-day procedures, we’re asking parents and guardians to speak with their bus riders about the importance of following expectations during dismissal.
Students must enter the gym and immediately sit in their designated bus section based on their bus number. Recently, we’ve had several instances where students missed their buses due to frequent bathroom visits or sitting in the wrong section. This not only causes delays but also creates serious safety concerns.
Once buses begin to be called, students must remain in their assigned areas and stay alert. Your support in reinforcing these expectations at home helps us keep all students safe and ensures everyone gets home on time.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Corner Lake a safe and respectful environment for all!

Corner Lake Middle School is proud to recognize an extraordinary academic achievement—five of our students earned perfect scores on last year’s End-of-Year Assessments!
Achieving a perfect score is no small feat. These assessments are rigorous, comprehensive, and designed to challenge students across a wide range of skills and knowledge. To master every question with precision reflects not only academic excellence but also dedication, perseverance, and a strong commitment to learning.
We are incredibly proud of these students for setting the bar high and showing what’s possible with hard work and determination. Their success is a testament to the supportive learning environment at Corner Lake and the outstanding educators who guide them.
Congratulations to our perfect scorers—you are shining examples of what it means to soar like a Golden Eagle! 🦅
Thank you for inspiring us all.

Corner Lake Middle School is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15. This month honors the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
Did you know? Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968, thanks to President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded to a full month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The dates were chosen to coincide with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.
At CLMS, Ms. Maeso and our Latinos in Action students have been working hard to bring Hispanic culture to life around the school! Spanish classes have researched Hispanic countries, and LIA students have decorated classroom doors to add vibrant cultural flair to our hallways.
We invite all students and families to join us in celebrating the beauty and diversity of Hispanic heritage. ¡Vamos Águilas!

We’re excited to spotlight our amazing Corner Lake Middle School FFA chapter, led by the dedicated Ms. Hoagland, for attending a recent Chapter Leadership Training!

Under Ms. Hoagland’s guidance, our FFA members represented Corner Lake with pride, professionalism, and a passion for agricultural education.
We’re proud of their commitment to growth and service.
Thank you, Ms. Hoagland and FFA, for planting the seeds of leadership and helping our Eagles soar! 🦅

This week in Ms. Becker’s Algebra class, students were hard at work reviewing for Progress Monitoring Assessment 1 (PMA 1)—but this wasn’t just any review session. Students used their own data from previous assessments to track their growth, identify areas for improvement, and set personal goals.
Progress monitoring is a powerful tool that helps students and teachers understand how learning is progressing over time. It provides real-time insights into academic strengths and challenges, allowing instruction to be tailored to meet individual needs. When students engage with their own data, they become active participants in their learning journey—building confidence, accountability, and motivation.
We are proud to see our Golden Eagles taking charge of their academic success!
📣 Ask your child about their progress monitoring data—you might be surprised by how much they’ve grown and how well they understand their own learning path.
Way to go, Ms. Becker and Algebra students! Your commitment to growth and excellence is what makes Corner Lake soar. 🦅

On Wednesday, September 24, students from Corner Lake Middle School joined together for See You at the Pole, a nationwide event organized by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Gathering around the school’s flagpole before the start of the day, students prayed for their schools, families, friends, government, and nation. OCPS is always working to improve the experience of our students and families, and your feedback is essential to that process. We’re asking families to complete a short, voluntary, and confidential survey to share your thoughts about your experience. The survey is available in English and Español and will close on October 14, 2025.
At Corner Lake, we’ve set a goal to reach 20% family participation, but we’re currently at just 4.7%. We know our families at The Lake are capable of so much more! Your input helps us grow, improve, and better serve our students and community.
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and help us reach our goal—so we can build a better future together!
